Here is the truth about how up-front
pricing and diagnostic fees works:

  1. A plumbing company charges a diagnostic fee, which covers the cost of a technician evaluating your repair, their travel time and the vehicle expense.
  1. The technician then formulates a cost for your repair based on what “a book” says is a national average for that category of the repair or replacement, and to include his or her perception of difficulty above and beyond the book average.
  1. Usually, the client is given multiple options with multiple prices of which they are to choose what they would like. The terms (best, better and least desirable) are commonly used, or something close to this wording.
  1. The client is also told that if they go with the service that the diagnostic fee is going to be waved.

Many years ago, Allen’s Plumbing Inc. looked very hard at this trend that was emerging in the plumbing industry. We even purchased training with a company that was teaching this business practice. This company had a promise of a program that would increase sales and profits in a big way. In the end, Allen’s Plumbing Inc. decided that it did not align with the moral principles of the company.

The problem we see with up-front pricing is that it leaves many openings for deceptive business practices. We are not saying that companies that offer up-front pricing are deceptive, but we felt it was not in line with the Allen’s Plumbing Difference.

It was suggested to us by the company we paid for the training that we should pay our technicians a bonus above and beyond their hourly pay based on sales that exceed what the company has as a minimum for the line item service. Add to this that most of the book labor times are very generous to the technician for time allotted.

During the training that we paid for, we were told by their trainer to evaluate the customer and see just how much money we could possibly charge. For example:

  • If the customer was really distraught you could charge more money
  • If the home was really nice you could charge more money
  • If they have nice vehicles or a boat, you could charge more money

All the while, telling the people that you will waive the diagnostic fee! The trainer told us that of course you are to have a minimum fee built in that covers the time of the technician to evaluate the repair, travel time to get there, and the vehicle expenses. There was a lot of smoke and mirrors being taught in this training. Even though we paid for this training that we never implemented, the investment was well worth the knowledge we are now passing onto to you.
